College and Career

New York Edge provides students with critical guidance on identifying the academic or professional pathways that are right for them, and then hitting the milestones along those pathways.

During the school year program, students focus on college and career readiness initiatives. This includes providing individualized support (subject tutoring and SAT tutoring), as well as workshops (which include parents and/or guardians) on financial aid and the college application process. New York Edge (NYE) also offers onsite and/or college tours and attendance at college fairs. To provide additional support to Flushing High School students, NYE has also partnered with The College Board, enabling high school students to earn college credit through the CLEP program. Each summer students will have the opportunity to earn up to 12 college credit hours by successfully passing a CLEP exam in one of several first-year college courses.

Through our extensive network of partners, NYE provides students with opportunities to acquire technical job skills to enhance their career pathway pursuits. Driver’s education, CPR/1st aid certification, lifeguard certification, sports officiating certification, carpentry apprenticeship, podcasting, and DJ/music production training programs all allow students to develop knowledge in areas that can translate to immediate employment opportunities upon completion.

By partnering with organizations in various industries, NYE will provide students with experiential learning opportunities that expose them to different career fields while still in high school. These internship experiences are paired with workshops and individual counseling that help students explore their career options, learn job skills, life skills, and apply classroom concepts to real-world situations. Upon completion, successful internships may also lead to permanent employment. Students also receive a stipend for their participation in the program.

NYE provides students with individual mentoring that supports youth to identify and communicate their career interests. We collaborate with school guidance counselors and advisors to help students develop pathways to high school graduation, career skills, career exploration and tangible work experiences. By empowering students to participate in workshops, career fairs, speed mentoring and internship opportunities we hope to immerse them in experiences that will prepare them for post-secondary success.
